(THREE YEARS.) By CHARLES H. LONG, late Captain First Company and Colonel First Regiment New Hampshire Volunteer Heavy Artillery. ON the 18th of August, 1863, the War Department granted to the Governor of New Hampshire special authority to raise a second company of heavy artillery to garrison the defenses of Portsmouth harbor, and Ira McL. Barton, of Newport, was commissioned captain. This company was mustered into the United States service on the 17th of September, 1863, and was stationed at Ft. McClary, Kittery Point. It remained there doing garrison duty until May, 1864, when it was ordered to Washington, D. C., and was sent as a relieving and occupying force into Forts Bunker Hill, Saratoga, Lincoln, Bayard, Gaines, and Foote. On or about October 1, 1864, the company became Company B, First Regiment New Hampshire Volunteer Heavy Artillery. In February, 1865, this company, under command of Capt. George P. Thyng, was ordered for duty in the defenses of Portsmouth harbor, where it remained doing garrison duty at Ft. McClary until the 11th of September, 1865, when it was mustered out of the service. The Second Company New Hampshire Volunteer Heavy Artillery was stationed at Ft. McClary, Me., Department of the East, September 17, 1863; attached to Department of Washington, Twenty-second Army Corps, May 9, 1864; Haskin's Division, Department of Washington, Twenty-second Army Corps, May 17, 1864; Hardin's Division, Department of Washington, Twenty-second Army Corps, July 9, 1864; First Brigade, Hardin's Division, Department of Washington, Twenty-second Army Corps, December, 1864; Defenses of Portsmouth Harbor, New Hampshire, Department of the East, April 30, 1865.
