They realized that a truly good and upright man and a consistent christian had passed from their midst and that it would be difficult to fill his place. For many years, 'Uncle Ben' as he was known to everybody, had resided here, and the names of his friends and well wishers were legion. Possessed with a cheerful disposition, he made others happy and now that he has gone hence, he will be sorely missed. Benjamin Apgar was born in Califon February 25, 1835 (sic). In early life he became converted. He learned the trade of millwright which calling he followed until illness prevented some nine weeks ago. In his early life he became identified with the Taylor Iron Company and built the old forge and foundry and the first trunk in the Solitude Dam. This trunk was constructed of wood like a barrel and was some nine feet in diameter. He also built the second trunk when the first wore out and this lasted until finally a steel trunk was put in. Those who worked under him spoke of him as a kind boss who always had a pleasant word for his men and they all liked him. He was married twice. By his first wife he had two daughters both of whom are dead. His second wife died some ten years ago. He was a member of the M.E. Church of this place and also belonged to Hobart Lodge, F. & A. M. He is survived by one son Marshal F. Apgar and one daughter Mrs Sarah Apgar of Brooklyn. He also leaves one brother Nicholas Apgar of Bound Brook and three sisters, Emily, Catharine, and Julia all of whom live in the vicinity of Califon. His funeral which was largely attended was held yesterday morning at 10 o'clock a the home of his niece Miss Julia Apgar and at half past ten at the Reformed Church. The service was conducted by the Rev. M.A. Johnston, pastor of the M.E. Church, assisted by the Rev. Mr Conklin, pastor of the church, and interment was in the Union Cemetery at Lower Valley, where the services at the grave were in charge of the members of Hobart Lodge. The floral offerings were many and handsome. The bearers were Harry Latimer, Solomon Levy, Elmer Bonnell, John Moore, Thomas Sedgman, and Howard Apgar. Undertaker J.K. Naughbright in charge..
