Small Last week we gave a short notice of the death of Ben Small, which occurred on Wednesday morning. Ben was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Small. He was a young man of rare mental ability, and had equipped himself with a good education, having graduated, two years ago, with high honors from the Hillsboro College. Not satisfied, however, with his scholastic attainments, he went to Cincinnati, the first of January, to take a business course in Bartlett's College. He had been there about three weeks when he contracted a severe cold. After suffering with this two weeks, he came home on Monday, the 11th inst. As soon as he and his mother were alone, he looked up from the warm couch where they had laid him, and said, "Mother, I've come home to die." She tried to dissuade him from such a thought, but he knew the end was near. Yet, he was not afraid of death. He had always led an exemplary life, and, under the pastorate of Rev. J. P. Currin, had been one of the most conscientious and devoted workers at Evans Chapel, near his home. He rejoiced in a saving knowledge of Him whose death had robbed the grave of its terrors. His disease developed rapidly into typho-pneumonia, nine days after his arrival at his earthly home his freed spirit took its flight to the mansion not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. He was conscious to the last, and as his life had been beautiful, so was his death. As his eyes closed to the scenes of earth, his face brightened with the glories that streamed through the heavenly gates ajar. To die such a death were worth a thousand years of pain. Benjamin B. Small was born in this county, October 8, 1873, and died February 20, 1895. He lived with his parents on the home farm until sixteen, when he entered the Hillsboro College from which he graduated in June '92. Because of his failing health, his parents persuaded him to remain with them until January 1, '95, when he entered a Commercial College, as herein stated. He united with the church at Evans Chapel in October, '93, and was an active worker in the mission cause. Besides his parents, he leaves two brothers, Mont and Aaron, and a sister, Mrs. Sally Campbell, of Marshall, to mourn his death. Ben was only twenty-one years of age, having entered upon his majority in October last. There is something unusually pathetic in the death of this young man, so grandly equipped for life - like the noble vessel freighted for a long and happy and useful voyage, going down in the harbor e'er her anchor has been weighed. It seems untimely. But God knows best. "Leaves have their time to fall, And flowers to wither at the north wind's breath, And stars to set - but all - Thou hast all seasons for thine own, Oh Death!"
