Mr. Tubbs was a logger. He made his home in Baker for the past eight years. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jessie (Walter) Schuh of Baker, OR and Mrs. Dorothy (Lester) Lund of Forest Grove, OR; two sons, Arthur Tubbs of Harrisburg, PA, and Junior Tubbs of White Salmon, WA. Three brothers, Elmer Tubbs of Woodland, WA, Bert Tubbs, of Prescott, AZ, and Bill Tubbs of Carson, WA; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maudie in 1954, brothers, Delbert in 1903 and Earl in 1967. Funeral services Aug. 1, 1969, at Gardner's Chapel in White Salmon. Rev. Eugene Haynes of Bethel Congregational Church will officiate, burial will be in White Salmon Cemetery. ------------------- Ben Tubbs was born July 1, 1894 in Dixon Co., NB. He was the second of six children born to Charles H. and Della (Fuller) Tubbs. His father was born in IL and had moved as a child to Illinois, Michigan and then to Dixon Co., NB before moving to Southern Washington in the 1880's to work as a logger. His mother was also from Dixon Co., NB and had migrated to Southern WA with her family in the 1880's and grown up there. After meeting in WA, his parents returned to Dixon Co., NB where they were wed and had two sons, Elmer and Ben. The young family returned to the great northwest and took up a homestead for themselves at the old Mill B site at Chenowith, WA where Ben's four younger brothers were born and he grew up. Life was rugged in the west when the Tubbs were hewing out a home in the wilderness and rearing their boys. Supplies were packed into the back country. Each fall his father, Charles Tubbs, with some of the older boys and neighbors made a trip to a nearby town for the winter grub. One year they were forced to live almost exclusively on deer meat. The wagon load of flour, sugar, coffee and other staples was washed away in the swollen stream they had to cross. Somewhere near the winter of 1907, as nearly as one of the sons could recall, the family did live on chicken and sauerkraut; it was all they had. So terrible was the winter ice and snow it was impossible to get out until spring to add to the larder. Ben's father ran cattle and supplemented the family income with work at the Oregon Lumber company driving an ox team. Ben started working as a logger with his father and brothers. On Aug. 6, 1919 he was married to Maudie Mae Mitchell. Maudie was his cousin and had grown up with the Tubbs family. Together they had four children and made their home in many places including Toutle, Cowlitz Co., WA, Laurel Township, Klickitat Co., WA and BZ Corners, WA, where Ben worked as a logger and in sawmills. Around 1961, several years after his wife passed away he moved to Baker, OR, where he passed away July 29, 1969 at the age of 75. He is survived by sons, Arthur Tubbs of Harrisburg, PA, Junior Tubbs of White Salmon, WA, daughters, Mrs. Jessie (Walter) Schuh of Baker, OR, Mrs. Dorothy (Lester) Lund of Forest Grove, OR; 19 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Elmer Tubbs of Woodland, WA, Bert Tubbs, of Prescott, AZ, and Bill Tubbs of Carson, WA. He was preceded in death by wife, Maudie Tubbs in 1954, father, Charles Tubbs in 1931, mother, Della Tubbs in 1956 brothers, Delbert Tubbs in 1903 and Earl Tubbs in 1967.
