Mr. Mathias was born January 2, 1912, in Mathias, W.Va., and was the son of the late Thomas and Alice Mathias Mathias. He retired after 20 years as a claims examiner for the U.S. State Department. He was a 55 year member of the Mount Herman Masonic Lodge in Hyattsville, Md. He was a graduate of Shenandoah College in Dayton and taught school in Hardy County, W.Va., in Dove Hollow. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of Garretts Chapel United Methodist Church. On March 18, 1933, he married the former Roselee Ellen Lepley, who died June 6, 1986. Surviving are three sons, Gary D. Mathias, Martinsburg, W.Va., Ronald F. Mathias, Havre de Grace, Md., and William R. Mathias, Lost City, W.Va., nine grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. The Rev. Jonathan Hedrick will conduct the funeral at noon Saturday at Garrets Chapel UMC. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery near Mathias.
