Read More	******************************** Benjamin Eugene Vidricksen, 88, of Salina, passed away peacefully into God’s open arms Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, having been surrounded for many days by his loving children. “Senator Ben,” as he was affectionately called by many, was born June 11, 1927, the son of Henry Vidricksen and Ruby Roberts Vidricksen. He was the second born of the couple’s five children, all of whom were born at home on their farm west of New Cambria. After graduating from Salina High School in 1944, Ben chose to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy, serving 14 months in the South Pacific Islands. Upon his return, he enrolled at Kansas Wesleyan University, earning his AB degree in pre-law in 1951. During this time, he met and married his wife of 41 years, Lola Nienke Vidricksen. The couple had five children. After being hired in 1947 and working for five years as a field representative for Kraft Dairy, Ben was asked to take the position of plant manager in their creamery in O’Neill, Neb. His growing family enjoyed the next seven years in this small community. It was in the year 1958 that he returned to Salina to join his brother, Bob, and his mother, Ruby, in owning and managing Weber’s Drive In, Red Hen Lounge and the well-known family restaurant, Betty’s Fried Chicken. Over the next three decades, the businesses grew to include Salina Restaurant Equipment Co., Cavalier Club and Vidricksen’s Catering. In the midst of becoming a successful businessman, Ben helped to form and became squadron leader for the Saline County Flying Deputies, delivering blood for the Red Cross. He recalled their many missions with a sense of purpose and pride. His dream of public service came to pass when he was appointed to fill the newly vacated 24th district Kansas Senate position in 1979. He was successfully re-elected five times, tirelessly serving his constituents for a total of 21 years. The accomplishments that most define his career include his 16-year position as assistant majority leader, the Highway 81 Comprehensive Transportation Initiative and being finance chairman for the “Ad Astra” Capitol dome sculpture project. Survivors include his five children, Nancy Richardson, of Kansas City, Kan., Janice (Marvin) Mattison, of New Cambria, Benjamin II (Karen) Vidricksen, of Kipp, Penny Monroe, of Kansas City, Mo, and Jeffery (Julie) Vidricksen, of Goddard; 14 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and brothers, Bob and Fred, both of Salina. Many nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry; mother, Ruby; wife, Lola; brother, Norman; sister, Helen; and two step-great-grandchildren, Mystique Bird and Ethan Lassley. Services for Sen. Vidricksen will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Sams Chapel, 100 E. Claflin, Salina, with Pastor Loren Houltberg officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, New Cambria. Visitation will be held from 2-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, with family receiving visitors from 5-7, at Ryan Mortuary.
