Nichols, of Shelbyville, preached in the Leonard Christain church. Mr. Vanvacter was a pioneer, and the son of a pioneer of Shelby County. He was born on a farm one mile east of Leonard, Feb. 5, 1846, being a son of Benjamin and Anna Vanvacter, two of Shelby County's first settlers, who setted in Taylor Township in this county in its early history. His father died many years ago. Frank, as he was familiarly known remained single and cared for hi swidowed mother, until she was remarried to Cornelius McDaniel who after a few years was called to his reward preceding her to the grave by several years. In 1883 he formed a partnership in the Mercantile business with T. P. Manuel under the firm name Vanvactor & Manuel, and after a short period of mercantile life he felt that confinement was not conducive to good health and he sold out to T. P. Manuel and went to Kansas and after a few months of recreation he came back to Leonard and made his home with T. P. Manuel until 1901 when Mr. Manuel moved to Clarence after which he made his home with his brother, R. O. Vanvacter until his death. He was a man whose word was as good as any man's bond, his reputation for honesty and integrity was unquestionable. He did not indentify himself with any church until in the year 1901, when he confessed his faith in Christ and became a member of the Christian church in Leonard, of which he remained a faithful member until death. But he was always found in the right side of all moral and civic questions. He was always true to his friends, and always first and uppermost in his mind was the welfare of his mother whom he never forgot and whom he delighted to visit.
