Description	:	Ben and Mary came to Nebraska the fall of 1889, locating in Boone County near Albion where they resided two years. They then moved to a farm 7 miles south and 2 miles west of Tilden. They got as far as Spaulding, Nebraska, and learned that there had been a big prairie fire ahead of them. They were told that there would be no feed for their livestock as the fire took in a large territory. They turned to the north and settled on a homestead seven miles south and two miles west of Tilden. This was a timber claim and they were to plant 12 Acres of trees and plow a fire guard two or three rods wide for protection from prairie fires. They built a sod house. The walls were three feet thick. It was snuggy and warm, but they had a hard time keeping the varmints out. They also built a pole shed for the horses and a corral of tree limbs as there was nothing else available with which to build. They grazed their cattle and horses the year around. Later they built the homestead which at present is owned by Cleland Wilcox. In their later years they moved to Tilden and lived in retirement for many years. There home is now owned by Henry Wauer. They were the parents of ten children who were, Jennie (Wilson), Mabel (Maughan), Minnie (Wall), Frances (Wall), Roy, Martin, Bernard, Clifford, Orvis and Clarence. Roy living in California, and Orvis, living at Emerson, Nebraska, survive.
