Benjamin Friedley, one of the oldest citizens of Peotone died at 11 o'clock Saturday morning, January 20th, after a short illness with the disabilities of old age. Mr. Friedly was born at Amt Wenge, Bern, Switzerland January 15, 1825 and was 87 years and 5 days old at the time of his death. Benjamin Friedley, one of the oldest citizens of Peotone died at 11 o'clock Saturday morning, January 20th, after a short illness with the disabilities of old age. Mr. Friedly was born at Amt Wenge, Bern, Switzerland January 15, 1825 and was 87 years and 5 days old at the time of his death. He came to Illinois in 1855 and lived here until 1867 when he moved to Iowa. Twelve years ago he returned to Illinois and made is home in Peotone. Mr. Friedley was married to Elizabeth Tschannen in 1858. To this union ten children were born. Five are living. They are Albert, George, and Fred of Sumner, Iowa; William, and Mrs. Mary Jennings of Amboy, Minnesota. Mrs. Friedley died in 1883. In 1885 Mr. Friedley was married again. Two children, Frank of Minnesota, and Mrs. Esther Stein of Harvey, Illinois survive from the second union. The wife and mother died in 1895. In 1899 Mr. Friedley returned to Peotone and was married to Mrs. Anna Tschannen. She survives. Mr. Friedley was converted about the year 1858 under the ministrations of Rev. JJ Escher and he united with the Evangelical Association. When he returned to Peotone in 1899 he became a member of the United Evangelical Church. He was faithful to his church and only sickness kept him away from any of the services. Funeral services were held at the UE Church Tuesday morning, Rev. John Hoerner officiating. The remains were taken to Sumner, Iowa for interment. The deceased was an unassuming man. Those who knew him held him in high esteem. In his death the community loses a good citizen. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Messrs and Mesdames John Friedley and daughter of Channahon; Arnold Funstein and daughter, Manhattan; M Jennings, Amboy, Minnesota; George and Albert Friedley, Sumner, Iowa; Chris Schorrie, of Dwight, Illinois; Mrs. Mary Younker and son, Channahon; Wm. Wiremann, Manhattan; Frank Younker, Chicago; Mrs. Henry Kueker and daughter, Marsella, So. Chicago; Mrs. Mary Braun, Joliet; Chris Tschannen, Monee. Contributor: Brutus Best (47342808)
