Benjamin was married previously to Elizabeth (Izor) Kelly (1819-1839) on February 25, 1839 in Preble County, Ohio. Obituary on file at the Garst Museum, Greenville, Ohio -- "Died, on Thursday at noon August 5th, 1869, at his residence in Corydon, Iowa, of Pernicious Remitting Fever, Mr. B. H. Kelly. The subject of this notice was born in the state of New York, was in the 54th year of his age. When he was three years old his father removed to Preble County, Ohio. He settled with his family on a farm near this place, in the spring of 1855. In April 1857, he was elected Sheriff of this County, which office he held for a period of three terms. 3 years last February he purchased the drug store then owned by Dr. Clark, and, in partnership with his son, was conducting it at the time of his death. He was an estimable, enterprising citizen; and always took a deep interest in anything that promoted the welfare in the community in which he lived; and was liberal in supporting public charities. He was a loving husband and a kind and indulgent father. No man in the community for honesty and integrity, was esteemed higher than Mr. Kelly, and those who knew him best, respected him most. Having finished his work among us he has gone to the bright shores of the future, from whence no traveler can return. His memory and good example is all that is left us. He leaves a large number of friends and a wife and two children ( son and daughter, both married,) to mourn their irreparable loss. Although unable to speak, he was conscious to the very last; a few moments before he ceased breathing he reached out his hand to his wife, as if to bid her an affectionate farewell."
