Description	:	Ben Kelso, for more than fifty years a highly respected citizen of this community, passed to the great beyond at the home of his daughter, Mrs G.R. McAlpin, in Clarinda. He was a man of powerful physique, backed by undaunted courage, and following the close of the civil war he was a terror to those of disloyal sympathy. Read More	Ben Kelso, for more than fifty years a highly respected citizen of this community, passed to the great beyond at the home of his daughter, Mrs G.R. McAlpin, in Clarinda. He was a man of powerful physique, backed by undaunted courage, and following the close of the civil war he was a terror to those of disloyal sympathy. He was a splendid citizen, good neighbor, a kind husband and father. He will be sadly missed by a wide circle of friends. Deceased had been an invalid for nearly two years, and suffered a great deal, but through it all he was very patient. Funeral services were held here Monday afternoon in the M.E. church conducted by Rev Penn, assisted by Rev William of the Clarinda M.E. church. Burial services at the cemetery was in charge of the Masonic lodge of which he was a faithful member. Interment was in Memory cemetery. Benjamin H. Kelso, son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Kelso, was born in Du Bois county, Ind., March 19, 1842, and grew to manhood there. He enlisted in the civil war in 1861 in Co E 24th Ind., infantry and served three years. He came to Taylor county, Iowa in 1864, where he spent most of his life. He was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Turner March 16, 1865. To this union ten children were born seven boys and three girls; one boy and two girls died in infancy. The children living are Mr S.G. Kelso, Long Beach, Cal.; L.L. Kelso, St Joe, Mo.; B.F. Kelso, New Market, Iowa; C.O. Kelso, Fort Des Moines; J.F. Kelso, Belton, Mo; Mrs Effie McAlpin, Clarinda and Bert Kelso, Chilmark, Alla, Canada. His wife preceded him in death July 10, 1884. In 1877 he was again united in marriage to Mrs Axie Eads. No children were born to this union. In 1906 he was again united in marriage to Mrs Mary Mann; who departed this life in 1917. He united with the M.E. church in 1884, of which he was a member until the time of his death. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of New Market, also G.A.R. post of New Market. After a lingering illness, he passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs G.R. McAlpin at Clarinda, Iowa, May 7, 1921, at 10:20 a.m. at the age of 79 years, 1 month 18 days. Besides his seven children he leaves to mourn his loss 18 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs Mollie Stewart, Huntingburg, Ind. IN 24th Infantry He was Mustered Out on 7/31/1864 b. 05-19-1842 in Dubois County, Indiana d. 05-07-1921 in Clarinda, Iowa.
