AMOSS DIES Benjamin Howard Amoss, a lifelong Harford County farmer, died September 1 in the same farm house in which he was born near Fallston. He was 89. He was the som of the late Hamilton and Lida Divera Amoss, and was the husband of the late Loretta E. Bachman Amoss to whom he was married 59 years. Mr. Amoss and his wife raised six children, including the late Senator William H. Amoss, who represented Harford County in the Maryland General Assembly. "The farm and family were important to him," his son George Amoss said. The Amosses married in 1931, he said "with $400. They were partners." Mr. Amoss bought the 133 acre farm, which had been in the family for over 130 years, from his father, Hamilton Amoss, Sr., in 1933 for $ 18,000. "He got the farm and some cows for that," George Amoss said. His brother, Hamilton Amoss, Jr., purchased another farm belonging to their father. Mr. Amoss had been a respected Holstein dairy farmer for 40 years, after which he raised Angus beef cattle for another 20 years. In reference to eight decades on the same farm, most of those years without a vacation, Mr. Amoss once said he wouldn't change a thing. "It's been a good life - I've stayed in farming because I have truly enjoyed it," he said in an article written by Don Morrison in a 1993 edition of Seniors Today. His son, George Amoss, pointed out, the children did pay for a few days vacation in Florida for their parents. While on the vacation away from the farm, though, the Amosses passed the time visiting dairy farms. But, that's indicative of who Mr. Amoss was. As youngsters, George Amoss can remember piling into the back of the family pickup truck back in the 1940's and 1950's . The family woul ride around looking at farms and then stop for ice cream cones. "It was a simple life," George Amoss said. Although his children followed career paths other than farming, Mr. Amoss was proud that he was able to raise them and help them with their educations. According to George Amoss, Mr. Amoss said farming was hard, dirty work, but it was the kind of dirt that washes off. His standing in the cattle world and community were evidenced by the honors bestowed on him. About 10 years ago, he was honored by the National Holstein Association for 40 years as an active member. In 1983, he was named Harford County Farmer of the Year and was proclaimed a "Harford County Living Treasure" by the Harford County Council in 2000. "He was a tremendous influence, " said his grandson, William D. "Bill" Amoss, "with his honesty and hard work. He was such a leader in the community . Very few didn't know my grandfather." He was active in farm and dairy cattle organizations and 4-H club activities. "He had a real way with animals," George Amoss said, adding he'd go out in the morning, call the cattle in , and they would come. "His rapport with animals wasn't limited to cattle, however. Mr. Amoss participated in steeplechase horse races and won many awards with his Walker fox hounds. Mr. Amoss was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Fallston where he and his wife served in various capacities over the years. He loved to read and watch baseball. "He very much loved baseball, " George Amoss said, "He played it when he was growing up and loved to sit and watch it. He followed the Orioles. " But, with all the accolades and accomplishments, Mr. Amoss achieved, his life was focused on the farm and family. He is survived by three sons, George B. Amoss of Chadds Ford, PA, John O. Amoss of Columbus, Ohio, and Benjamin H. Amoss, II of Harrisonburg, Va.; two daughters, Rachel A. Pieper of White Hall, and Jane A. Dean of Bel Air; a sister Elizabeth M. Hiser of Conowingo; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, William H. Amoss. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today ( Wednedsday) at St. Mark Catholic Church by the Revs. Edward Bayer, Francis X. Callahan, and Edward Hemler. Interment will be in Bel Air Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Mr. Amoss' grandsons, Gregory A. Dean, Jason A. Amoss, Jonas I. Amoss, C.Leonard Pieper,III, Jacob E. Pieper, Benjamin H. Amoss,III, George B. Amoss,Jr., and William D. Amoss. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Willard P. Amoss, Robert Six, Frank Thomas, John Caine, Brook Caine, John W. Cairnes,II, and Ginger Christensen. Those who desire may contribute to the Hospice of Baltimore, 4C North Avenue, Suite 422, Bel Air, MD.
