Read More	Highland Recorder October 10, 1919 HURT IN A RUNAWAY Ben Rexrode and two little sisters, of Eastern Highland, were in a runaway and wreck last Thursday evening and all of them were more or less hurt. They left town driving a spirited two-horse team, and when beyond he top of the mountain they ran off, wrecking the buggy, crippling the horses and giving two of the occupants of the vehicles some ugly cuts and bruises. They were picked up by a passing automobile and brought back to town, where Dr. Fox dressed their wounds, and they were able to go home late n the evening. One of the horses was supposed to have a broken leg, but it proved only to be a bad cut and sprain. Highland Recorder April 13, 1934 Doe Hill News: Mr. Ben Rexrode of the Cowpasture got his leg broken last Wednesday. Highland Recorder March 12, 1937 Mr. Benjamin R. Rexrode passed away at 12:15 a.m. Monday at the Kings Daughters Hospital, Staunton, from a head injury which was caused from a fall. Mr. Rexrode fell Sunday morning and struck his head on metal which was fatal. Surviving are his father, Ambrose Rexrode; one brother Harvey of Phoenixville, Pa.; Sisters, Mrs. Elva Wilson of Eastern Virginia; Mrs. Sam Neil of Phoenixville, Pa.; Mrs. Paul Sloan of Havrede Grace, Md.; Meda, Mary Elsie, Beulah, Zeldar and Sallie Mae of Baltimore and Richmond. Funeral services will be held from Bethel Methodist Church on the Cowpasture Wednesday at 10 o'clock, burial will be in the family cemetery at Miss Martha Rexrodes on South Fork, Mr. Rexrode is a cousin of Benjamin Hull who met a tragic death some time ago. FALL IN JAIL ENDS LIFE OF HIGHLANDER B.R. Rexrode, Highland county resident, who was lodged in the Staunton jail Saturday night on a charge of driving an automobile while under the influence of intoxicating liquor, died at the King’s Daughters’ hospital Monday morning at 12:15 o’clock, the victim of a head injury received, it is said, when he fell in the local jail Sun- day morning. A victim of epilepsy, according to Coroner G.C. Campbell and already a victim of one or more skull fractures, Rexrode got up from his cell Sunday morning; then suddenly fell and fractured his skull on the steel floor. He was taken to the King’s Daughters’ hospital about 11 o’clock Sunday morning. He received the fatal blow on the left front region of the head. Sergeant R.A. Lynn jailed the man after apprehending him near the Stonewall Jackson tavern on the Lee highway, north of the city. It was asserted that Rexrode frequently had fallen from an epileptic attacks. Dr. Campbell said he viewed the matter solely as an accident; and that it was so considered by the young man’s family. The family did not want an autopsy; nor would the county or city pay the expenses of one. Dr. Campbell said he was of the opinion that an autopsy should be performed in all accidental deaths. Inasmuch as the death occurred within the city, it was stated any investigation or autopsy should be performed by the city coroner. Sheriff G.M. Gilkeson said that Rexrode was visited by Dr. Campbell, jail physician, and his removal to the hospital ordered by him. The quick wit of a fellow prisoner, Norman Knighton, alias Jack Knighton, probably prolonged the life of Rexrode for a short time. According to other inmates of the jail, Knighton ran out to the stricken prisoner when he fell and rendered first aid by using a spoon to force his tongue away from his wind pipe to momentarily prevent strangulation. Knighton is now awaiting trial on charges of armed holdup and shooting a Waynesboro policeman in attempting to execute the stickup. Physicians who visited the jail and rushed the Highland County man to the King’s Daughters’ hospital, expressed opinion that the generous act and skilled first aid served to add a few moments of life. — Staunton News Highland Recorder March 19, 1937 Benjamin Rankin Rexrode was born October 8, 1901, died March 8 1937. He leaves to mourn his loss, his father Ambrose Rexrode, step-mother, Ollie Devericks Rexrode, eight sisters, Mrs. Jared Wilson, Lorton, Va.; Mrs. Sam Neil, Mrs. Howard Bortner, Oaks, Penn.; Mrs. Bob Lee, Baltimore; Mrs Nash Boguess and Mrs Robert Goldsley of Richmond; Miss Zelda Rexrode, Columbus Ohio and one brother, H.O. Rexrode of Oaks, Penn and one stepsister Mrs. Henry Zimmerman, Washington, D.C. Young Rexrode was known to his friends as Ben. He was honest liberal and won many friends with his genial smile. Funeral services were held at Bethel church on the Cowpasture River, March 10 at 10 a.m conducted by Rev. L.M. Moffett and Rev. Craun. Hymns used were “No Disappointment in Heaven” and “In the Land Where We’ll Never Grow Old” Burial was in the family cemetery on the Rexrode home place near Palo Alto. The funeral of Benjamin R. Rexrode was held from. Bethel M.E. church by Rev. L.M. Moffett, assisted by Rev. M.J. Craun. They sang two impressive duets. Ben’s brother and all of his sisters except Zelda attended the funeral.
