Read More	Obituary ELGIN - Benjamin Ray Hunsberger died of cancer on June 29, 2012 at his home in rural Elgin. Ben was born Jan. 9, 1943 in Postville, Iowa to Mervin and Hulda (Berg) Hunsberger of Elgin. He was baptized and became a charter member of the Elgin Lutheran Church, and was confirmed there in 1958. Ben grew up devoted to church, school and farming. He graduated from Valley High School in 1961. Drafted into the US Army in 1964, Ben went to Fort Leonard Wood and the Norfolk Military School of Music and was later deployed to Orleans, France with the 76th Army Band. When discharged by the Army in 1966, Ben returned home to work the farm and also hauled gas for Standard Oil of Elgin. He met Patricia Moeller in Postville and they married in June 1978 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein. To this union two children were born. Ben continued farming the home farm and neighboring land for many years, being one of the early no-till stewards of the area. He operated a cow-calf operation, hog operation, and later changed to feeder cattle before retiring in 2011. During his farming years, Ben was engaged in many Elgin Lutheran Church leadership positions, as well as a lifelong member of the Elgin Lutheran Church choir. Ben was actively involved in many local and extended area organizations: Elgin Legion Post #352, Boys State Board of Directors, Valley Community School Board, Fayette County Landfill Commission, Fayette County Extension Council, Pleasant Valley Township Trustee, and performed in numerous Elgin Homecoming musical productions as well as community Christmas performances. Ben loved his farm, family, friends, neighbors, 76th Army Band buddies, Valley classmates, antique tractor rides, deer-turkey-and-squirrel hunters, cabin gatherings, acquaintances at farm sales and auctions, cruising and eating, roses and sunflowers, and coffee at Guppy's, the Co-op, and the Buying Station. Ben was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Clarion Hagelie, and niece Diane Batterson. He is survived by his wife Pat, daughter Beth (Damon) of Earlham and son Andy of Iowa City; his sisters Barbara Hagelie of West Union and Phyllis (Darwin) Preuss of Omaha; cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
