Died April 28, 1893 May 1, 1893 Boone county Democrat A very sad accident occurred at the High Bridge on Friday morning, which resulted in the death of Benjamin Rissler, an estimable young man who was born and raised in this vicinity. Young Rissler has been employed all winter on the bridge and was an eye witness of the first and second accidents that have occurred there since the work began, little suspecting that his own life would pay the penalty of the third accident to happen at that place. But none of us can tell at what hour we will be called upon to go, or in what manner the taking off will come to us. On the morning of the accident young Rissler was engaged in prying off the ties on the old part of the bridge preparatory to putting on the new ties. While thus engaged the engine of the work train came slowly over the bridge, attached to which was the platform car on which is stationed the little engine and machinery used in hoisting material. Rissler stepped to one side after the usual custom when trains are passing, and at the same time engaged in conversation with the engineer, being well acquainted with him. In the position taken he was entirely out of the way of the platform car, but unfortunately for him the crow bar which he used in taking up the ties was extended in toward the track from where he stood, the upper end of which he held in his hand. The fire box of the little hoisting engine extended over the edge of the car a few inches and which came in contact with the bar in his hand, knocked Rissler off of the bridge, from which he fell forty feet, striking on various parts of the bridge on the way down, and finally struck head downward between two of the iron supports of the bridge that rest on the tube near the ground. From this wedged in position he was taken by some workmen near by, more dead than alive and never afterwards uttered a word or seemed to be conscious of anythi9ng around him. The engine came up here and took Drs. Farr and Brechbil down to the bridge and then went to Des Moines and brought up the regular surgeon of the railroad. The wounds were dreadful to look at. His skull was so badly crushed that pieces of the bone had to be taken out in dressing the wound. The bones of his left shoulder and arm were so badly crushed that they protruded through the skin in many places, besides other wounds and bruises of a serious character. The doctors did all they could for him but it was plain from the start that his life was beyond the reach of surgical skill. Later in the evening he was brought here to the home of his brother, Hoyt Rissler, where his parents, brothers and sisters and loving friends gathered around him but unconscious of their presence life passé slowly away, and at 9 o'clock that evening he breathed his last. From here his remains were moved to the home of his father, Lewis Rissler, one and a half miles north of town, where the funeral services took place on Sunday, conducted by Elder W.B. Golden, of the Christian church. The remains were interred in the Luther cemetery, where a large number of friends were in attendance. Young Rissler was twenty three years old, had a good character and industrious habits and ere long would have been a useful man and valuable citizen. His sudden taking off is a sad blow to his parents, brothers and sisters and brings sorrow to the hearts of his many friends.
