He was born on February 26, 1915 in Albia, Iowa to Benjamin Tharp and Bonnie Tharp, He was married to DeLoris Main on October 6, 1940 in Moravia, Iowa, she preceded him in death on August 14, 1999. He was born on February 26, 1915 in Albia, Iowa to Benjamin Tharp and Bonnie Tharp, He was married to DeLoris Main on October 6, 1940 in Moravia, Iowa, she preceded him in death on August 14, 1999. Survivors include four sons, Gary Tharp of Longwood, Florida, Francis Tharp of Indianapolis, Indiana, Bruce Tharp of Altamonte Springs and Lt. Col. Stephen Tharp stationed in Korea, eleven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Two brothers, Frank Tharp of Richmond, Virginia and John Tharp of Albia also survive. Smith had a long, distinguished career with the U.S. Navy, enlisting in November 1934 and retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer in February 1965. After retiring from the Navy he worked for the State of Missouri in Jefferson City. He and DeLoris settled in Altamonte Springs in 1976. Funeral services were held Thursday May 10 at the Rolling Hills Moravian Church in Longwood, Florida with Reverend David Guthrie officiating. Burial was at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Moravia, Iowa on May 13, 2001, Smith Tharp was an active member of the Rolling Hills Moravian Church for the past 25 years.
