Description	:	Benjamin Thomas Rimbey was born in 1861 in Il- linois. He was one of a family of fifteen�eleven of whom were boys. In 1884 he married Louisa Jane Sheppard, born 1865 in Illinois. We left Savonburg, Kansas, March 1900, five fam- ilies by immigrant train. They were my father (Ben- jamin Thomas Rimbey), his two brothers, Jim and Sam, newphew Oscar Rimbey and Mr. Munroe Gwin. I cannot remember anything about the train journey. We arrived in Lacombe Alberta on April 3, 1900. I seem to remember a place we were all taken for the night called "Days Hall" where each family made their pallets on the floor. Five families sleep- ing in one big room, how could I forget that! I was told Papa rented a farm out of Lacombe for us� Mamma, Aunt Ollie (no relation, she had lived with us in Kansas, and we loved her), my sisters Lilla 12 years, Lorue 7 years and myself Ethel 3 years. We were in Lacombe until the spring of 1901. Shortly after Papa bought 80 acres of good land joining our homestead on the west. That gave us plenty of land for pasture and some grain farming. I can remember Papa hitching the heifer on the "walking plough" with the horses. My parents ac- complished so much through steady work, love and laughter. We all had our work to do and loving Christian parents to direct us. Lilla helped Mamma in the house; with the geese, garden, and chickens, that was plenty. Lorue and I took care of the stock. That included milking the cows, teaching the new calves to drink milk, feeding the horses, cows and pigs. We also put hay in the work horses' manger. Papa usually fed them their oats, as he was very careful about the measure he used. We cleaned the barn and enjoyed putting the nice clean bedding down for the tired horses. Papa never gave us heavy work, but always work he thought we liked; and we liked most outside work, from ploughing with oxen to stocking grain. I can recall sitting beside Papa in the shade of a stook, where he kept a jug of cool drinking water. He talked of the nice things that could happen in Alberta in later years and lots of it has happened. One thing was the railroad, and it came very near where he said it would. In the year 1910, a tragedy struck our home, our dear young mother of 44 years passed away, leav- ing the 5 of us in shock. Papa, sister Lilla, married to W. A. Saunders, Lorue 17 years, at home, Earl Benjamin, our treasure, 5 years old, and myself, 13 years old. At that time there were no telephones and no Doctors in Rimbey. One of the fastest sad- dle horses and a good rider was sent to Bentley for the Doctor there. He came by team and buggy, which meant many hours of travel. He did not know what was wrong with Mamma, gave her a pill and left. We then had to get a message to the Doctor in Lacombe. He came by car. It was too late, he couldn't do anything for her. It was a ruptured appendix, a rather new thing at that time. Ben Rimbey remained on the original homestead with Earl and Stella until 1942 when Earl & Stella moved to Dawson Creek. The farm was then rented out and Ben lived with his daughter Lome Eckandt and family in Rimbey until his death in 1946.
