The Shelbina Torchlight (Shelbina, MO), 1902-06-13; Page 1, column 5 Uncle Ben Singleton, one of our oldest citizens, died at his home in Leonard June 10th. He was nearly eighty years of age, and has been a good citizen and an industrous man—helped to bring this county into cultivation and civilation. Three old citizens are rapidly leaving us. Mo., June 10th, 1902. He had been in bad health many years and during the last few years of his life he had suffered great pain. Uncle Ben, as he was known by every one, was born in Culpeper Co. Virginia, March 15, 1825, and had entered upon his 78th year. He moved to Missouri in early youth and endured many of the hardships of the pioneer settlers. We have heard him relate many interesting stories of the trials of those early days. He was married to Miss Mary F. Vandiver May 10th, 1858. He leaves this faithful wife, to whom he was always so affectionate and kind, and three children to mourn his death--Kate and Thomas Singleton of Leonard and Mrs. Anise Ray of St. Joseph, Mo. --His children were all with him when he died. He also leaves 3 grandchildren, who were great pets with Grandpa, 2 sisters, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Phillips of Marion Co. and a brother Samuel of near Maud, Mo. They were all too feeble to come and see him, his brother being 92 years old. --In early manhood he made a profession of religion, and united with the Baptist church, and by moving about he lost his church connection and never renewed it. He still kept his covenant relation with God, and expressed himself ready and willing to go when the Master called him. He lived a life that gained him the respect and kindly feeling of all who knew him. We don't think he leaves an enemy. --His funeral discourse was preached by Rev. J. S. Todd of Shelbyville, June 11th, at 10 a.m. from Rev. 21 chapter, after which his body was laid to rest in the Leonard Cemetery. His last days were days of pain but if ye reign with Christ ye must also suffer with him, through great tribulation he has entered into rest. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." C. G.
