Bennett, 37, 1321 24th street, a veteran flier, was killed Saturday evening when a small plane which he was testing crashed and burned at the Sioux City Municipal airport while his wife and two children looked on. The plane had reached an altitude of about 100 feet after take off when it nosed down, crashed and burned, Walter E. Betsworth, airport manager, said. Betsworth said civil aeronautics administration officials had been notified and that inspectors would come here today to conduct an investigation. Norbert Locke, director of the Iowa state aeronautics commission, also is expected here today. It was reported that a new engine had been installed in the plane and Bennett, who operated a filling station at 920 Grand avenue, was making a test flight. Bennett had been flying since 1936. His wife Lucy and their children, Lloyd, 11, and Connie Lou, 8, were standing near a hanger watching when the plane, evidently out of control, fell to the ground. A witness said the craft exploded and burned after striking the ground. The plane was owned by Mr. Bennett. Born May 5, 1911 at Hinton, Ia ., Mr. Bennett came to Sioux City more than 25 years ago. He had resided here since, except for a year at Portland, Ore., where he worked for Standard Oil Co. He operated a station for the company here. For about a year prior to 1933 he was employed in The Journal pressroom. He married Lucy A. Kightlinger In Onawa In 1934 at Onawa, Ia. He was a member of the Moose lodge and the First Presbyterian church. He was active in the P. T. A. at Floyd school, which his children attend. Other survivors are a brother Francis and his mother, Mrs. J. W. Bennett, both of Sioux City; and six sisters, Mrs. Laura Schindel, Mrs. Marie Booth, Mrs. Marian McArthur, all of Sioux City; Mrs. Virginia Boegtler of Merrill, Ia.; Mrs. Pearl Gruber of Bakersfield, Cal., and Mrs. Evelyn Kightlinger of Portland, Ore. Rev. Warren K. Martin will officiate and will be in Memorial Park cemetery. Pallbearers will be Louis Koch, M. B. Heenan, Golden Reninger, R. P. Shearer, H. B. Morgan and K. L. Fellwock.
