He had many friends in this locality who will mourn the loss of an honorable and industrious man. Benson L. Hoyt, a prominent citizen of the county, died at his home in Monticello last Monday evening, February 6, in the prime of life, aged 45 years, 11 months and 15 days. Mr. Hoyt became afflicted with the measles several weeks ago. He was very sick, but was convalescing properly, when pneumonia developed. He went safely through that and was apparently getting along nicely when ???gitis unexpectedly developed in a decided form. His physician devoted nearly all of his time to Mr. Hoyt's care and attention during the latter days of his life, but the progress of a virulent malady could not be stayed. The funeral was conducted at the family residence, yesterday afternoon by Rev. Mr. Starr, the pastor of the Christian church of Marion, assisted by Rev. M. A. Breed of the Congregational Church and Rev. J. W. Innes of the Presbyterian Church. The services at Oakwood Cemetery were in charge of the members of Burns Lodge #173, A. F. & A. M., with Post Master Ervin E. Reed officiating. Benson L. Hoyt was born in Scotch Grove Twp., February 21, 1865. When he was an infant, his father, Lyman Hoyt, died. He had a good mother of excellent business judgment, who kept her family together, and built upon the financial foundation laid by the father and husband. When young Hoyt reached man's estate, he was taken into partnership by his elder brother, Edward, who had established a prosperous nursery business upon the home farm. The younger member of this firm of Hoyt Bros., developed excellent business ability, and he did his full share in extending the firm's growing business. During recent years Edward Hoyt has traveled extensively, and the business passed into the hands of the junior members of the firm, who also engaged in other successful enterprises on his own account. Mr. Hoyt had an excellent standing in the community among business men, who regarded his word as good as a written pledge. He was universally esteemed as a citizen, and as a neighbor he will long be remembered for his kindness and peace loving disposition. While his loss to the community will be great, yet in the home where the wife and children, the brother and the sister were close to him in those more sacred relations of life, he can never be out of remembrance. Love will twine its chaplets about his memory there, and every day they will grow brighter, even unto the day when there shall be a glad reunion. Mr. Hoyt was married December 31, 1900 to Miss Blanche Applegate, who survives. He is also survived by two sons, also one brother, Edward Hoyt, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Drebelbis and Mrs. Anna Bosworth, the latter a resident of PA.
