Berchel ("Mike") Harper, who proudly participated in the ASCS for more than 50 years, died at his home in Omaha, [Douglas County], Nebraska, on April 19, 1998, at the age of 90. Harper was employed by Northern Natural Gas Company (now Enron Corporation) for more than 40 years. It was there in 1947, that Harper first heard of the existence of the ASCS, which had been founded in New York the year before and was in the process of establishing a Chicago Chapter. Harper, who was new to the Corporate Secretary position and was looking to network with colleagues at other companies in the Midwest, quickly joined the Chicago group. He later became President of the Chicago Chapter and served as national Chairman of the ASCS in 1971-72. He continued to be active in the Society after his retirement and attended National Conferences up until the past few years. Harper is survived by his wife Alice W. [Dale] Harper. . "Mike" Harper, Corporate Secretary for Northern Natural Gas Company of Omaha, has been elected National president of the American Society of Corporate Secretaries at its national conference in Los Angeles, June 13-16. . Mr. Harper is the Society's 25th president and the first from this area. The Society is composed of some 2,000 members representing 1,500 of the largest firms in the United States and Canada. . Among the many matters Mr. Harper coordinates and directs at Northern are those pertaining to the stockholders' and directors' meetings, corporate documents, the stock exchanges, the Securities Exchange Commission, insurance and special studies. . Mr. Harper was born near Cumberland, Cass County, Iowa, in 1907, and after several moves, his parents, the late Earl and Bertha [Madden] Harper, settled on a dairy farm north of Fairbury, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school in 1924. He joined Northern in 1931, when the company was barely a year old, and was made Secretary in 1945 and Corporate Secretary in 1959. . He served as a member of the Task Force on Paperwork Management, a part of the Second Hoover Commission in 1954 and 1955. He is also affiliated with many civic and business organizations as well as several natural gas organizations. He is past president of the Omaha Symphony Association and has been a director, a member of the Executive Committee and Vice President of the American Society of Secretaries, Inc. . END. .
