Osceola Sentinel, Osceola, Iowa June 22, 1944, Page 6 Berdie Routh-Carpenter Berdie Elnora Routh, daughter of Walker and Mary Routh, was born in Marion county, Iowa, January 20, 1876, and died in Osceola, Iowa about 10:30 p. m. June 10, 1944. Most of her life was spent in and around Osceola, except for a few years in Lenox and Des Moines, Iowa. On July 29, 1914, in Des Moines, Iowa, she was united in marriage to John Leonard Carpenter. She and her husband have made their home in Osceola since their marriage. To this union one son was born, Marvin L., who survives. Besides the one son, the husband and three step-sons and one step-daughter are left to mourn the passing of a dear one. The step-sons are: Frank L. of Osceola, Iowa; Fred of Des Moines, Iowa, and Floyd M. of Springfield, Mo. The step-daughter, Alice Engle resides in Des Moines, Iowa. She united with the Christian church of Osceola in her early twenties. She has been a good wife, mother and foster mother to those closest to her. It has been said that her step children were as close to her and she loved them as much as she did her own son. And her step-grandchildren, thirteen in number, loved her dearly. Mrs. Carpenter had been in poor health for about four years. her last illness was of about eighteen months duration. Besides her husband and children who mourn her passing she leaves two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Matilda Kittler of Osceola and Mrs. Lillie Lukenbill of Leon, Iowa; and one brother, Willie Routh of Osceola, not to mention her many friends and other relatives. Funeral services were held from the Miller Funeral Home, Wednesday afternoon, June 14 at 2:30 with Rev. McKenzie of the Methodist church at Murray officiating. Interment was in Cox cemetery.
