Description	:	Ben was born to George and Elsie (Pool) Otten. Ben married Katie Lavakia in 1890 in Germantown Church, Chancellor, SD. Ben and George were born to this union. Ben attained the age of 84 years, 10 months and 9 days. The following is from the Lennox Diamond Jubilee Book. Berend George Otten, son of George and Elsie (Pool) Otten, was born at Nienweschans, Groningen province, Holland. He received his early education in Holland, and served in the army of his native land from 1883 to 1885 in the field artillery. When he was 24 years of age he came to the United States and direct to Lennox, SD (April, 1887), making the trip with a brother, Ed, who now lives in Chancellor. "Ben" first worked for Harm Bleeker, on the farm two miles north of Chancellor, continuing these duties two years, and then worked two years for William Heibult and one year for John Bloom. His parents and five brothers, John (near Parker), George (Lennox) and Claus (Lennox) and Miss Katie Lavakia also immigrated to this country a few years after he did, and in the spring of 1890 he was married to Miss Lavakia in the Germantown church. Following his marriage he worked on the section at Parker for seven years, farming in the Chancellor locality for 11 years, and then coming to Lennox more than 31 years ago, 30 of which he has operated a dray line here.
