Bernadette Frances Sievers Gannon was born December 11, 1931 in Carroll, Iowa. She attended elementary school, Logan #8, a country school in Calhoun County, grades K-8. She was very active in 4-H. Read More	Bernadette Sievers Gannon, 75, Manson, Iowa, formerly of Delmar, Iowa, died Tuesday afternoon, March 6, 2007 at Kavanagh House Hospice, Des Moines, Iowa. Bernadette Frances Sievers Gannon was born December 11, 1931 in Carroll, Iowa. She attended elementary school, Logan #8, a country school in Calhoun County, grades K-8. She was very active in 4-H. She attended High School in Lohrville, Iowa, at Lohrville Consolidated. She was valedictorian of her graduating class. Her interests were music and drama. She had the lead role in all four years of her High School theater productions and loved playing the piano. She worked one year at her High School as the secretary to the superintendent before she attended Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, for teacher training. She taught 3rd and 4th grade at Lincoln School in Lake City, Iowa for two years. She had 36 students in her classes. She married William James Gannon on Decoration Day, May 30, 1953 at St. Joseph's Church in Lohrville, Iowa following his Army service in the Korean War. They farmed in Clinton County and were parishioners of The Immaculate Conception at Petersville, Iowa. They had five sons and three daughters. Following their divorce and later in life, Bernadette earned her BS degree in Liberal Studies from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls. Over the years, she received recognition for her poetry and her published works: Prose and Poetry I and II and Poems For Pondering. The latter is part of the Library of Congress collection, #87-8132. Recently, she became a Life Member of the National Home Garden Club. Bernadette was an avid gardener and birdwatcher at her home in Manson, Iowa, for the past 23 years. She thoroughly enjoyed stamp collecting and scrapbooking. She loved to entertain her children and grandchildren in her backyard and garden. She loved her church and she lived her faith in all settings of her life. Bernadette was an Honorary Member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church Women's Guild of Manson, Iowa. She contributed financially and spiritually to a host of missions throughout her entire lifetime. These included: Association of the Miraculous Medal; Salvatorians, Society of the Divine Savior; Franciscan Mission Associates; The Claretians; The Josephites; Franciscan Friars of the Atonement; The Missionary Benedictines of Christ the King Priory; Seraphic Mass Association of the Capuchin Franciscans; Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate, Oblate Missions. Bernadette enjoyed the company of her children in the last chapter of her life, in all her pain and in all her joy, reminiscing on What Will Matter, a poem that helped her focus on what really matters: "Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear. So too your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won't matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end. It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant. So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you bought but what you built, not what you got but what you gave. What will matter is not your success but your significance. What will matter is not what you learned but what you taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion courage, or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example. What will matter is not your competence but your character. What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone. What will matter is not your memories but the memories that live in those who loved you. What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what. Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident. It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice. Choose to live a life that matters. Character counts." Those preceding Bernadette in death were her husband Bill, as she always referred to him, her dear sons, Patrick and Dennis, her loving parents, Arthur Jacob and Frances Ellen (Cronin) Sievers, her loving sister, Sr. Dorothy Marie Sievers, O.S.F.. She is survived by her children and sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, Michele and Patrick Bannon, West Des Moines, Iowa, Thomas and Kathleen Gannon, Phoenix, Arizona, Michael Gannon, Delmar, Iowa, James and Dorothy Belling, Chanhassen, Minnesota, Margaret and Daniel Kuhl, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, and Christopher and Cynthia Gannon, Waukesha, Wisconsin. She is also survived by her grandchildren Patrick and Elizabeth Kuhl, Sarah and Molly Bannon, William and Cassalynn Gannon, Daniel Belling, Margaret and Mary Gannon and by her sister and brother-in-law Marjorie and Eldon Herrig, Dubuque, Iowa and her brother and sister-in-law Gerald and Nancy Sievers, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2007 with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Funeral Liturgy 10 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2007 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt.
