Description	:	Bernadine (Birdie) Flood, of Quaker City, passed away to a new life with her Heavenly Father early Monday morning, August 28, 2017. She was born October 31, 1922, in Kennonsburg, Ohio, a daughter of the late Leonard R. and Freda (Hague) Lashley. Read More	Bernadine (Birdie) Flood, of Quaker City, passed away to a new life with her Heavenly Father early Monday morning, August 28, 2017. She was born October 31, 1922, in Kennonsburg, Ohio, a daughter of the late Leonard R. and Freda (Hague) Lashley. Having graduated from Batesville High School in 1940, she was a loyal Batesville Beaver her entire life, rarely missing an alumni banquet, including her 75th high school celebration. She lived in Canton, Ohio, during the 1940’s where she worked at the Hoover Company for several years before marrying Harold Flood in 1949. They moved to Quaker City in 1953 to work on building their much-loved dairy farm, “Struggling Acres,” and raising their children. Her many passions included gardening, canning, sewing, cooking, and making pies. She always loved a good pie-making contest and all the friendly cooking competitions at church. In light of her birthdate, Halloween remained one of her favorite holidays, during which she created costumes and made homemade cookies, candy, and caramel corn for the children who often visited by the truckload. She was active in many school and community activities including PTA, Band Boosters, Farm Bureau Association, and especially the Quaker City Folk Festival. Lingo’s Hardware in Quaker City was Birdie’s second home for thirty-five years. She loved working there and considered everyone as family. Helping decorate scenes in the windows at the store for the Folk Festival was a special highlight. Birdie was a lifelong member of Kennonsburg United Methodist Church, where she was active in every way including cleaning the church as a child, entertaining ladies of the Good Cheer Circle, serving as treasurer, and even singing in the Christmas and Easter choirs in her late 80’s and 90’s. One of her favorite pastimes was to read and write about “faith,” and she filled many pages about her Christian journey. Her children thank everyone who helped care for their mother the past few years while she was at home. She was blessed to be surrounded by such loving friends, neighbors, and family. Birdie spent her last year at Jackson Ridge Rehabilitation and Care Facility, close to her daughter’s home in North Canton, where she met new friends and was lovingly cared for by so many special staff and therapy workers. She is survived by her loving children, Scott Flood of Las Vegas, and Cindy Flood Ries of North Canton; treasured grandchildren Bre Ries and Josh (Angela) Ries; and sweet great-grandsons Aiden and Gavin Rausch. In addition she leaves her brother with whom she shared many good times, Leonard R Lashley; sister-in-law Delores Lashley; and brother-in-law Ray (Shirley) Flood; and many other family, friends, and neighbors. Bernadine was preceded in death by her siblings and in-laws Winifred (Sis) and Bill Rich; Wilma (Bob) Sell; Mildred (Boudle) and Nick Meighen; Mary Alice (Massie), Robert Bates, and George Rumble; William (Esther) Lashley; and Donald Lashley. Visitation will be held Friday (Sept 1, 2017) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home in Quaker City. A celebration of Bernadine’s life will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 2, 2017) at Kennonsburg United Methodist Church with Pastors Mark Slay and Jim Lee officiating. A graveside service will follow at Quaker City Friends Cemetery with a meal afterward at the church. In lieu of flowers, Birdie’s children ask that you consider taking a few moments to brighten someone’s day by visiting an elderly neighbor friend or someone in a nursing home facility.
