He died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 1995, at Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven. Bernard Ortmeier was born May 3, 1923, to Maximilian and Elizabeth (Schaefers) Ortmeier at Orient. He attended parochial grade school and high school at St. Liborius Catholic School at Polo, graduating in 1941. He then spent several years farming with his father on their farm northwest of Polo. He married Mildred Adkins on Oct. 11, 1948, at Polo. They lived in Hoven. For 14 years he owned and operated the Friendly Tavern in Hoven. Shortly before selling the tavern, he purchased a milk truck and started a retail milk route. His territory covered east of Watertown, south to Huron, west of Eagle Butte and north to Aberdeen. He continued his milk route until the early 1980's. He then worked at the Blue Valley Dairy Processing Plant in Hoven, retiring in 1993. For the past 30 years he was also employed as the Hoven City Finance Officer. Survivors include his wife, of Hoven; three sons, Edward B. Ortmeier of Norfolk, NE, Richard A. Ortmeier of Colorado Springs, CO., and Charles W. Ortmeier of Hartford; five daughters, Karen (Jerry) Hoven of Aberdeen, Linda (Doug) Fields, and Donna (Jerad) Prather, both of Sioux Falls, Evie Heim of Rockham and Bette(Raul)Chavez of El Paso, TX.; four brothers John Ortmeier and Jim Ortmeier both of Polo, Bill Ortmeier of Watertown and the Rev. Richard Ortmeier of Mobridge; two sisters, Agnes (Bill) Pangburn of Atlanta and Mary King of Scottsdale, AZ.; 23 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson and two brothers (one in infancy). Casket-bearers will be grandsons Bernie Fields of Sioux Falls, Chad Heim of Rockham,Jeremy Hoven of Aberdeen and Nick Ortmeier of Norfolk, as well as Terry Klocker of Hoven and Tim Klocker of Rapid City.
