Description	:	Bernard C. Stinn - Age 73 Bernard Casper Stinn, the son of Casper and Regina (Bauer) Stinn, was born on a farm north of Portsmouth, Iowa, in Harrison County on June 30, 1931. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. He became a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan in February of 1971. Stinn - Age 73 Bernard Casper Stinn, the son of Casper and Regina (Bauer) Stinn, was born on a farm north of Portsmouth, Iowa, in Harrison County on June 30, 1931. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. He became a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan in February of 1971. He attended school in Defiance and country school in the Corley area. As a young man, Bernard worked on the farms for Walter Scheel and LeRoy Plagman near Corley, and Nels Andersen during the lambing season by Shelby. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on April 19, 1951 during the Korean War. He received his basic training at Witchita Falls, Texas. He attended air craft engine mechanical school at Witchita Falls, Texas and electrical instruments schooling at Chanute, Illinois Air Force Base. He had schooling at Amarillo, Texas for jet engines. He was based at March Air Force Base at Riverside, California with the 15 Air Force, 22 Bomb Squadron, 19 Bomb Wing. He served overseas at Upper Heyford, England. He received his honorable discharge on April 19, 1955 at March Air Force Base at Riverside, California. On November 4, 1953, Bernard was united in marriage to Doris Sick at the Methodist Chapel at Denison, Iowa. To this union, two children were born: Elaine and Dale. After Bernard was honorably discharged, they made their home in Harlan. During the first years, he was employed at the Alfalfa Mill in Avoca, Iowa, part owner of S&S Skelly, part-time policeman in Harlan, worked for Harlan Contracting Company, and he was a volunteer for the Harlan Fire Department. He later was an owner/operator in the trucking business and leased to companies from coast to coast for thirty plus years. He retired in 1995 from Truckers Express, Inc. from Missoula, Montana, with an office in Council Bluffs. After retirement, he enjoyed remodeling and creating things from wood. The garage was his workshop castle. He was also kept busy with filling the bird and squirrel feeder in the winter time. Bernard enjoyed hunting, fishing and going camping and doing gardening. He spent many hours fishing on the banks at Storm Lake. He also liked to play cards, especially Cribbage, put puzzles together and do word puzzles. He died Monday, February 7, 2005, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-three years, seven months and seven days. In addition to his parents, Bernard was preceded in death by his daughter, Elaine, his two sisters, Eileen Sandage and Kate Bauer; two brothers, Wilfred and Donald. Survivors include his wife, Doris of Harlan, Iowa; his son, Dale Stinn and his wife, Edna of Harlan, Iowa; one granddaughter, April; step-grandchildren: Amber, Bart, and Beth; seven step great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Holtz of Atlantic, Iowa; Betty and her husband, Larry Maness of Wichita, Kansas; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 10, 2005 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa with Pastor Heather Ploen officiating. Serving as casket bearers were Frank Sick, Lee Stinn, Paul Stinn, LaVerne Hansen, Don Fries and Mike Stinn. Interment was held in Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa with Military Grave side rites by the American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 and the Shelby County VFW Post No. 941.
