Bernard Spartz of rural Kranzburg was injured Tuesday when a tractor he was repairing started up and ran over him. A hay bailer, which the tractor was pulling, also crushed Spartz, said his wife, Jeanette Spartz, 49. Spartz is still weak and could only write notes to his wife until several days after the accident. "He's getting better," she said Saturday. "They're going to take him out of the critical-care center." Spartz was listed in stable condition Saturday at Prairie Lakes Hospital, nursing supervisor LeAnn Meisenheimer said. "He was in critical condition," she said. "He's improving steadily." Spartz had sprayed ether into the tractor in an attempt to start it, Jeanette Spartz said. "He hit the switch and it started suddenly." Spartz will be transferred to a veterans' hospital in Minneapolis, Jeanette Spartz said. He'll stay there for two weeks; full recovery will take two to three months, she said. The tractor's tire ran over him, she said. He tried to roll out of the way but was then hit by the bailer, which spun him around three times, she said. Spartz' s hip was knocked out of its socket and he suffered internal bleeding, Jeanette Spartz said. He looked up to see his tractor, an 806 International diesel, run through a fence, turn around and head back toward him, she said. "It just missed him," she said. "And he knew he had to get into the pickup." Spartz was able to crawl to his pickup and drive a mile to the Ralph Kranz farm, where Kranz called for help.
