Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 11, 2020, at St. John’s Catholic Church, 201 Oak Street, Fort Atkinson, IA, with Rev. Nick Radloff presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the church. Read More	Bernard Neuzil, age 99, of Fort Atkinson, IA, died on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at the Ossian Senior Hospice. Memorials may be sent to the family at: 104 Julian St. Decorah, IA 52101 Bernard Francis Neuzil was born on June 20, 1921 the son of Frank and Julia (Wandas) Neuzil in Fort Atkinson, IA. He attended and graduated high school in Fort Atkinson. Bernard worked on electrical jobs until he was drafted in 1941. His basic training was in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He served in France and Germany during World War II. He was awarded 4 battle stars for his service. He served until the end of the war and got home to enjoy Christmas Eve with his family in 1945. Bernard began working on the Rilling family farm. He was invited to stay for the supper meal with the Rilling family many times and that is how he got to know the love of his life; Marie. As he became acquainted with Marie, he asked her to go out for supper with him and that is how it started! They enjoyed going out to eat, going to movies and car rides during their dating years. Bernard and Marie were united in marriage on Monday, July 1, 1957, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. For their honeymoon, they drove a 1950 Chevy to Texas where they enjoyed the drive, seeing the sites and visiting some family also. They were married for 55 years. Bernard kept working on the Rilling farm and also did cement work with his father and uncle. He began doing electrician and plumbing jobs as he was asked and learned on the job. He became quite an expert in the plumbing field and never had to look for work. Bernard was well known as the best plumber around the Fort Atkinson area! Bernard and Marie enjoyed many boat outings with their children as they grew up. They also enjoyed many motorcycle trips together. They traveled to several southern states including Florida and Texas, and many western states including California. Bernard loved his motorcycles, with a smile, he talked about the first motorcycle he owned, a 70cc and the last one he drove, a 1,500cc motorcycle. Bernard is survived by his children: Donald (Ann) Neuzil, Waukon, IA; Linda Neuzil, Decorah, IA; Marilyn (Danny) Holthaus, Calmar, IA; and Sandra (Jerald) Andera, Spillville, IA. Six grandchildren: Brian (Alathia) Andera, Megan and Amy Andera; Andrew, Alex (friend, Sapphire Stano) and Matthew Holthaus. Great grandchildren: Trace and Rainer Andera. Brothers: Danny (Ethie) Neuzil, Decorah, IA, and Norbert (Ione) Neuzil, Decorah, IA. Sister: Julia Brandt, Cedar Rapids, IA, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie. Parents: Frank and Julia (Wandas) Neuzil. Father and mother-in-law: John and Celia (Kuhn) Rilling. Brothers-in-law: Reynold Rilling, Jack Bales and Kenny Brandt. Schluter - Balik Funeral Home
