Interment was in Forest Hill Cemetery in Canton. Bernard Ralph Janssen, the son of Jacob and Marie (Schoffleman) Janssen was born Oct. 29, 1934 in Lennox. He attended school in Lennox. Bernard went to work for the South Dakota Department of Transportation, and worked his way up to Maintenance Foreman. In 1954, Bernard was united in marriage with Janice Peterson, and they remained married for 54 years. He was employed with the DOT for 43 years, retiring in 1995. Bernard was a very active member of Wesley United Methodist Church, taking part in many children's programs, including Kidz Count and Under God's Canopy. Bernard had a special love for children, and will always be remembered for his rapport with them. He was a member of S.D.S.E.O., an avid bowler, and took up golf after his retirement. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Janice of Sioux Falls; two sons, Ricky (Kathleen) of North Pole, AK, Robin of Sioux Falls; one daughter, Michelle Penson of Arlington, TX; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Kristin) Janssen, Joshua (Tiffany) Janssen, William Penson, Robert Penson, Brenna Penson, Conner Penson; two great-grandchildren, Samuel Janssen, Caroline Janssen; two brothers, Art (Theresa) Janssen of Green Valley, AZ, Herman (Joni) Janssen of Fayetteville, GA; a sister, Arlene (Robert) Ihnen of Lawndale, CA; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; and a sister, Alma. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society.
