There will be a Rosary at 6 p.m. with a Vigil following on Sunday, November 21, 2021, at St Michael's Catholic Church in Girard, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Monday, November 22, 2021. Bernie was born in rural Hepler, KS on July 8, 1939, to Joseph Luke O'Brien and Mary Ruth (Coomes) O'Brien. He attended a country school in rural Hepler and later attended St. Patrick's Catholic High School in Walnut where he graduated. He married Joyce Elaine Harris June 25, 1960 at St Patrick's Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on July 10, 1988. Bernie later married Beverly A. Humble on November 7, 1998. The children are Kevin (Janet) O'Brien and Kerry (Tammie) O'Brien of Hepler, KS; and Kim (Joe) Curran, of Farlington, KS; Crysti (Tom) Downes, Ozark, MO; Missy (Adam) Hayden, Pittsburg, KS; and Trisha (Gary) Schoenhofer, Girard, KS. Together they have 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Also - siblings, Florence Blaes, Cherryvale, KS; Marge Ralph, Farlington, KS; Edna Kennedy (Charlie), North Richland Hills, TX; Helen O'Brien, Belton, MO; Mary Ann Kennedy (Jack), Bentonville, AR; Theresa Williams (Charlie), Overland Park, KS; and Jim O'Brien, Tulsa, OK; and a host of loving relatives and friends. In Bernie's early career he worked in Wichita, KS, as a USDA Meat inspector and later moved to Kansas City, KS, as an inspector before moving back to Hepler on the O'Brien Homestead of 1868, to raise his family and pursue his career as a cattleman. Bernie was active in several organizations over the years. He became a member of Kansas Livestock Association in 1972 and would have been a 50-year member in January of 2022; A member of St Patrick and St Michael Catholic Churches; National Cattleman's Beef Assn; Hepler Ruritan; Hepler Hustler's 4-H Club as a leader; on the boards of Heartland Rural Electric (Sekan Electric) for 45 years; and Rural Water District #1 in Ft Scott, KS, serving as Vice President until his passing. Anyone that knew Bernie, knew he was just a good ole boy. He never knew a stranger and you never saw him without his cowboy hat. You never had to look far to find him because if he wasn't working cattle, he was sitting in a sale barn buying cattle. RIP Bernie O #70. His famous words, "Gotta get home to milk the chickens!" In addition to his wife, Elaine, he was preceded in death by his parents, brother JP O'Brien and brothers-in-law Don Blaes, Don Ralph, Don Harris, Bill Harris, and Charley Bird.
