Burial was in St. Ann's Cemetery, Frankfort. The Thelen Funeral Home, Redfield, was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Mike Lambert, Tom Lambert, Pat Lambert, Jim Hurst, Brad DeYoung and Kevin Fieldsend. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Frankfort Fire Department. Mr. Valder died Sunday, Feb 6, 1994, in Tampa, Fla. His health had declined since suffering a major stroke in July, 1991. He was born Jan. 13, 1908, on a farm near Frankfort to William and Onie (Goodrich) Valder. He was an "exceptional athlete" at Frankfort High School, winning the mile run in the South Dakota High School Track Meet as a Senior. At Yankton College he compiled "an outstanding record in basketball and in track and cross country." He won the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference cross Country Meet in 1927, 1928 and 1929, and the Intercollegiate Mile Run in 1928. He anchored Yankton College's winning spring medley relay team four consecutive years. In May, 1980, he was inducted into the Howard Wood Dakota Relays Hal of Fame in Sioux Falls for "outstanding performance in track and field." After graduating from Yankton College in 1930, Valder taught and coached at several South Dakota high schools. He married Alice Wilmarth of Aberdeen in June, 1934. In the early 1940s he began a farming career in Iowa and Minnesota. He then taught in Osage, Iowa from 1955 to 1960 and in St. Petersburg, Fla., from 1960 to 1976, frequently returning to Frankfort to maintain contacts in the community. In June, 1982, he assisted the Frankfort Volunteer Fire Department with retiring the debt on the new fire station. Survivors include three sons: William Valder,Tampa, Fla., Michael Valder, Phoenix, Ariz., and Joseph Valder, Oakton, Va.; one daughter: Joyce Valder Fries, Danville, N.H.; one sister: Genevieve Wimer, Boulder City, Utah (formerly of Redfield); and 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son: Robert Valder, in 1981.
