Read More	Bernard Talmage (Jack) Denton, 77, former Harrisonburg mayor, died early Saturday in Rocking Memorial Hospital. He had been ill several months. Mr. Denton, a retired partner in the J. S. Denton furniture store, held a host of high positions in governmental, civic and patriotic organizations. Hie 34 years of public service reached its zenith in World War II when he mobilized the Harrisonburg home front as president of the chamber of commerce, as organizer and director of the city-county aircraft warning service, as chairman of the area War Price and Rationing Board, as head of the city-county war bond drives and finally in 1944 as mayor. His proclamations as mayor set off bit Harrisonburg celebrations on VE and WJ days in 1945. Mr. Denton came out of retirement in 1962 to direct the young and struggling Harrisonburg-Rockingham United Fund for six years. He was the organization’s first executive director to reach campaign goals on time with regularity and as a result to be able to set aside an emergency reserve fund. Mr. Denton, the son of J.S. and Virginia Jenkins Denton, was the third generation in his family born in Rockingham County. His ancestors were early Shenandoah Valley settlers, moving from Denton, Md. as early as 1736. When he was seven, his family moved from Bridgewater, where he was born Feb. 16, 1896, to Harrisonburg. He attended local schools. He served in France with the 29th Division in World War I, and in 1919 he returned here to join his father and brother in the family furniture business. He retired in 1960. Mr. Denton was a charter member and past commander of Rion-Bowman Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a 50 year member of the American Legion and a member of Veternana of World War I and the 29th Division Association.
