Survivors include three sons, Robert Coder of Port Richey, Fla., James Coder of Atkins and Thomas Coder of Shellsburg; and a daughter, Patsy Wicks of Springfield, Mo. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four daughters-in-law, Connie, Beth, Loretta and Clare Coder; a son-in-law, Keith Wicks; a niece, Naomi Wade; and three nephews, Max, Dale and Gene Phelps. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters, her husband, a son, Jerry, and a niece, Carrie Etta. She was born Feb. 5, 1915, in rural Tipton, at the home of her parents, Etta Belle and Clarence Votaw Sharpless. After the death of her parents she went to live with her sister Esther. She graduated in 1933 from Marion High School and married John Henry Coder on Oct. 6, 1934, in Rochester, Iowa. John died in 1982. She worked for University Hospitals in Iowa City as supervisor of housekeeping for over 10 years, retiring in 1975. Berneice was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Quilters Club and Pautz-Chada Fellowship. She was a devoted housewife and mother. Her love of gardening, flowers, making afghans and quilts for her family will provide the family with many happy memories and keepsakes. A memorial fund has been established.
