Description	:	Berneice Kay, daughter of Henry and Meta (Sornsen) Kay, was born October 8, 1918 on a farm south of Walnut, Iowa. She was youngest of five children, she had two brothers and two sisters. At the age of four, her family moved to a farm northwest of Walnut until she was eight years old, then they moved to the Cuppy Grove area for seven years. She was youngest of five children, she had two brothers and two sisters. At the age of four, her family moved to a farm northwest of Walnut until she was eight years old, then they moved to the Cuppy Grove area for seven years. Her father worked as a farm hand, so they moved frequently. Berneice graduated from Monroe Country School at the age of twelve. Her family moved to Persia, Iowa when she was fifteen, where she worked as a hired girl for different families. She worked in Omaha, Nebraska during WWII sewing tents at Scotts Awning and Tents. On February 20, 1942, Berneice was united in marriage to Melvin Peters in Omaha. They made their home on a farm northwest of Walnut, where they raised their four children: Joanne, Donald, Darrell and Keith. On the farm, they had 200 laying hens and ducks for eating, they also raised hogs, stock cows and 15 milking cows. She was the fastest milker in the family. She always had to be done first so she could go in and cook for the rest of the family while they finished the chores. After Melvin passed away in 1985, Berneice moved into the town of Walnut. She passed her time sewing baby quilts for others. She stayed in her home until two years ago, she moved into Peace Haven Retirement Home. Berneice died at the Myrtue Medical Center on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 attaining the age of ninety-eight years, ten months and fourteen days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Melvin, son Donald, great-grandson Brock Barrett and his mother Marialice; sisters Eleanor and Margaret; brothers Leroy and Clifford.
