Description	:	Bernice Becker, 97, of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, October 3, 2014 at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington. Mrs. Becker was born May 16, 1917 near Houghton, Iowa, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Foecke Bentler. She graduated from St. John's High School in Houghton in 1935 and received her RN at Mercy Hospital in 1938. On April 6, 1942 she married James Milton Becker at Fort Dicks, New Jersey. Read More	Bernice Becker, 97, of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, October 3, 2014 at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington. Mrs. Becker was born May 16, 1917 near Houghton, Iowa, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Foecke Bentler. She graduated from St. John's High School in Houghton in 1935 and received her RN at Mercy Hospital in 1938. On April 6, 1942 she married James Milton Becker at Fort Dicks, New Jersey. He left for overseas shortly after their marriage. Mrs. Becker worked as a nurse at Aberdeen Hospital while he was gone. After his return in 1949, they moved to Mt. Pleasant where she worked as an obstetrics and surgical nurse at Henry County Hospital. They later opened Becker Jewelers and Mrs. Becker worked there as a certified bridal consultant. She and her husband were among the founders of the Retail Jewelers Organization and she was honored with a lifetime achievement award in 2011. Mr. Becker died on November 17, 1992. She was a lifelong devoted member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant and served for many years on the Parish Council. She was also a past chairman of the Old Threshers Committee. Mrs. Becker enjoyed reading and after she lost her sight she read over 1000 books from the Iowa Commission for the Blind. The loss of her sight affected her participation but she also enjoyed playing bridge, needlepoint and crochet, cooking, watching baseball, the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs, and most of all her loving family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and brothers, Leroy, Bud, Leonard, and Irvin, and sisters, Irene Bixenman and Evie Sanders.
