She died Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-four. Bernice was born in Denison and received her education in rural school at Goodrich #1. She was confirmed as an adult on March 29, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. On December 12, 1943, Bernice was united in marriage to Vernon Nihsen at the United Church of Christ. This union was blessed with the birth of four children. She worked at Farmland for 18 years after having been a cook at the Community Café in Denison. On September 6, 1984, she married Eddie Holdsworth at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home and farmed near Westside before moving to Arcadia, Iowa, where she lived until moving to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Spending time with family and friends were very important to her. She was a wonderful cook, and especially fixing duck at Thanksgiving. She helped Eddie build the model of Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, where she was a member. She liked to crochet and embroider. Other activities she enjoyed were polkas and ballroom dancing, fishing, playing Bingo and Pinochle. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Janet; three brothers: Walter and Clara Henningsen, Milroy and Eleanor Henningsen; and Henry and Marge Henningsen; three sisters: Milda and Rudolph Heide; Irene and Harry Sachau; and Emily and Alven Schurke. Survivors include her husband, Eddie; two sons: Vernis and his wife, Jean; and Lonnie; one daughter, Laurie; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold and his wife, Ellen; three sisters-in-law: Virgie; Helen and her husband, John; Grace; two brothers-in-law, Melvin, and Gilbert; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, May 11, 2009, at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Iowa. Rev. Benjamin Dose officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Westside Cemetery in Westside. Organist Rebecca Dose provided accompaniment for congregational hymns, "Rock of Ages, Cleft For Me," "On Eagle’s Wings," and "How Great Thou Art." (Solist in memoriam, Henry Henningsen sang "The Lord’s Prayer.") Serving as pallbearers were Robert Henningsen, Howard Henningsen, Marlo Henningsen, Kenneth Schurke, Jerry Schurke, Delbert Sachau, Mark Schurke, Don Johnson, Jerry Simmonsen and Curtis Sachau. The family invited everyone to join them in fellowship and lunch at the Westside Community Building served by the Zion Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
