Description	:	CHAMPION -- Bernice Elberta Mead, 90, died Friday (March 30, 2007) at Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial. She was born April 23, 1916, to Charles Emery and Ruth Elizabeth (Hampton) Mathews near Hiawatha in Dundy County. She attended grade school at District No. 73 west of Hiawatha and completed her education at Dundy County High School. She graduated in May 1934. She married Delmer Mead on Aug. 23, 1937. Read More	CHAMPION -- Bernice Elberta Mead, 90, died Friday (March 30, 2007) at Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial. She was born April 23, 1916, to Charles Emery and Ruth Elizabeth (Hampton) Mathews near Hiawatha in Dundy County. She attended grade school at District No. 73 west of Hiawatha and completed her education at Dundy County High School. She graduated in May 1934. She married Delmer Mead on Aug. 23, 1937. They made Champion their home for 63 years. They moved to Camp Berkley, Texas, when Delmer went to the Army boot camp in 1942. She returned to Champion when he was sent to another base. She waited tables in Champion at Mabel Ferebee's Cafe. She was a waitress for 32 years. She worked in several Imperial cafes including Spence Cross' Bakery, Babb's Cafe, Dollie's, and Mitchell's. She later returned to waitressing at the Champ-Inn, where she had several employers. They used to joke about her going with the business. She retired at the age of 73. After Delmer's death in September 2001, she lived at their home until April of 2004. She then moved to Parkview Assisted Living. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmar Mead; her parents, Charley and Ruth Mathews; sisters, Gwen Bennett and Willa "Babe" Beard; brother-in-laws, Charley Bennett and Warren "Coonie" Beard; sister-in-law, Eloise Mathews; and a nephew, Charley Lee Bennett. Survivors include her brother, Robert "Bobby" Mathews of Centennial, Wyo.; four nephews; three nieces; numerous great-nephews; great-nieces and special friends. Graveside services were today, 11 a.m., (MT) at Mount Hope Cemetery in Imperial, with the Rev. Kay Alnor officiating. A memorial has been established in her memory. Liewer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
