Bernice Irene (Buls) Kappmeyer was born on April 3, 1925, in her parent's home, Douglas Township, Bremer County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Wilhelm and Maria (Malzhan) Buls. Bernice was baptized on May 3, 1925, at St. John Evangelical Church – Siegel and confirmed on April 2, 1939, also at Siegel. Her class of only two was the last German Confirmation Class. Bernice Irene (Buls) Kappmeyer was born on April 3, 1925, in her parent's home, Douglas Township, Bremer County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Wilhelm and Maria (Malzhan) Buls. Bernice was baptized on May 3, 1925, at St. John Evangelical Church – Siegel and confirmed on April 2, 1939, also at Siegel. Her class of only two was the last German Confirmation Class. On December 12, 1943, she was united in marriage to Erwin Kappmeyer at St. John Evangelical Church – Siegel. The couple farmed in the Warren Township area until Erwin's death on October 13, 1963. Bernice helped with all farm work and also raised her family. Having built a new home on the land once owned by her great grandfather, she retired from farming and moved into her new home in 1965. Bernice's biggest enjoyment was working as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, where she organized the local Blood Drives for seventeen years. She also volunteered at several other places, one of these being the Waterloo Disaster Team where she traveled to other states and countries helping flood and hurricane victims. In 1998, Bernice was entered into the Iowa Hall of Fame by Gov. Terry Branstad, for leadership and many volunteer hours. In her spare time Bernice liked to golf and bowl. Bernice is survived by her four children and their spouses, Karlton (Pauline) Kappmeyer of Waverly, Aundrea Schrupp of Watertown, Minnesota, Kelvin (Chris) Kappmeyer of Waverly, Kenneth (Nancy) Kappmeyer of Waverly; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Bernice Buls of Denver, Iowa; and many other family members. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Erwin; a sister, Eva Miller; and two brothers, Lawrence and Edwin Buls. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 9, at St. John's United Church of Christ – Siegel, rural Waverly. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly on Monday, November 8, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Bernice's family for later designation Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly
