An independent woman, Bernice lived by herself on her farm until a few days before her death. Born November 18, 1918, in Burlingame, Bernice was a daughter, a wife and lover, a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a friend. She held bachelor's and master's degrees from Emporia State University and was a teacher for 39 years. She loved reading and enjoyed traveling, painting, and investigating family genealogy. She also did volunteer work, among many other activities. She was one smart woman who was a delight for friends and family to be with most of the time. She had a double-edged sense of humor, one witty but gentle, the other with lots more bite to it. The second one she kept to herself most of the time. Always, Bernice focused on her family. Those who died before her included her parents, Jesse L. and Cora B. Lear Romine, who died in 1953 and 1955 respectively; her three older brothers, Homer, Orval, and Boyd; and her husband, Bennie J. Johnson, whom she married April 30, 1941, and who died March 19, 1994. Those who survive are her daughters, Marilyn J. Ross of Concordia and Lois Kay Johnson of Emporia; Lois's long-time companion, Harold E. Anderson; Bernice's granddaughters (Marilyn's daughters), Christi D. Oakley, Manhattan, Darcey L. Hooper, Coffeyville, and Renee A. Schoonover, Louisburg; their respective spouses and fiance, Thomas R. Oakley, Phillip A. Hooper, and Randall W. Barker Bernice may have thought this a bit much; to her, they were Tom, Phil, and Randy and her great-grandchildren, Amanda R. and Shannon R. Oakley, Benjamin A. (Ben), Mark A., and Kelli A. Hooper, and Riley J. and Rayden L. Barker. Bernice was, at heart, a private person, and saying much more about her would have been quite embarrassing to her and would have made the cost of publishing her obituary appalling to her. Bernice did ask that this obituary be read to her and approved its content. Suffice it to say that those who knew her were privileged to have done so and that those who loved her will cherish the memory of her. At her request, Bernice has been cremated, and her ashes will be buried next to Bennie, her husband of almost 53 years, in the Burlingame City Cemetery, Burlingame, KS, with a simple graveside service at 4 p.m., Saturday, December 19, 2015. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Osage City Senior Center, 604 Market, or to the Osage City Public Library, 515 Main, if you wish.
