Nelson and Lela Nelson, was born Feb. 17, 1922 on her parents' farm west of Exira and died May 14, 1997 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic. She attended rural school, Oakfield #1, then graduated for the Exira High School with Class of 1939. She then helped on the family farm. On Sept. 26, 1940 she was united in marriage to Raymond C. Nielsen at the Our Saviour's Lutheran Parsonage in Audubon. They farmed east of Exira for a short time then in 1944 purchased a farm northeast of Brayton. Bernice was employed as a cashier at the Overland Truck Plaza at the Valley for many years. They moved into Atlantic in 1986. Bernice continued to work at the truck stop until it closed in 1987. She was a member of the Exira Lutheran Church. She had been a member of the Neighborhood Club for many years. Preceding her in death were her parents; her infant sister, Aileen Phyllis Nelson; her sister, LaVerna Nelson and her husband Raymond F. Nelson; her brothers-in-law: Arnold Nielsen; Elmer Fries; and Elfrida and Bill Johnson. Survivors include her husband, Raymond Nielsen of Atlantic; her sons and their wives: Roger and Linda Nielsen of Eagan, MN; Daryl and Barbara Nielsen of Lincoln, NE; and Paul and Kathy Nielsen of Denison; her grandchildren: Brad and his wife Kristen Nielsen of Richfield, MN; Michelle and her husband Brian Niehus of Eagan; Jon and his wife Jill Nielsen; Chad Nielsen; Brian Nielsen; Aaron Nielsen; and Justin Nielsen all of Lincoln, NE; Josh Nielsen; Tiffany Nielsen; and Nathan Nielsen all of Denison; her great-grandchildren: Andrew Nielsen and Kory Nielsen both of Richfield, MN; her sister and brother: Virginia and LeRoy Corwin of Ankeny; and Curt and his wife Sally Nelson of Anita; her sisters-in-law: Vera Nielsen of Exira; and Kristina Fries of Anita; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends."
