Bernice was born Aug. 16, 1918 to Andrew and Anna (Bystrom) Holm at her family home of Mayfield Farm north of Lake City. As a young girl she worked as a mother’s helper for young families in the community. While visiting relatives in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area she decided to stay in the city, where she worked as a waitress and a maid. She returned home to Lake City and after her mother’s passing she cared for her father. She married Lyle William Clary on March ll, 1942, in Maryville, Mo. Lyle, his bother Delmar and their father had a trucking business for years along with farming. Lyle and Bernice are survived by their two daughters, Jane Ann (Paul) Schaben of Carroll, and Jacqueline (Frazier Hollingsworth) Clary of Littleton, Colo. She had four grandchildren, Ryan of Eagan, Minn., Sean (Lori) of Johnston, Thad (Carmen) of Urbandale, and Rani Schaben of Clive; three great-grandchildren, Colton Schaben of Ames, Ciara Schaben of Clive and Emma Schaben of Urbandale. She’s also survived by her brother, Bernard (Bernadine) Holm of Lake City, and many nieces and nephews. After moving to Carroll, Bernice worked at several places before she became manager of the lunch counter at Lee’s variety store, where her quick wit and exceptional cooking skills made the counter a favorite destination and won her a national award. She also spent years at Ellerbrock’s clothing store and Agribolt in Arnolds Park and Carroll. She had many hobbies and was always willing to try something new. She was an amazing cook and every year she canned Colorado peaches. But her pickled beets are legend along with her butterscotch pie. She loved to garden, crochet, read and travel. She was a world traveler. She enjoyed Australia, where she said she felt very much at home with the people of Sydney. Also to Sweden, where she met some relatives who showed her Varmland, Sweden, the area where her father was born close to a beautiful fjord. She enjoyed her Alaskan cruise, the whales and dolphins and never met a boat or ship or ocean she didn’t love. From Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean to Cape Ann in the Atlantic to the North Sea she seemed to have a sailor’s heart. And to the delight and embarrassment of her friends and family, a sailor’s vocabulary. She is preceded in death by her parents, Anna Marie (Bystrom) and Andrew Erie Gustafuson Holm; her brothers, George, Bus, Clifford, Harold and Merl who was killed in action November 1942 in New Guinea; and her sisters, Mabel (Floyd) Clark, Esther (Dutch) Dillivan, Evelyn (Bill) DeHart, Leona (Fat) (Claude) Studdard, and Millie (Harold) Bean. Her family suggests in lieu of flowers to donate to the Memory Unit at Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City, Stewart Memorial Hospice, or Iowa Hospice.
