Mac (as she was called by many) was also surrounded by the thoughts and prayers of her extended family and friends across the U.S. The eldest child of Edwin and Ruby Wickes, she was born 6 July, 1922 in Pennville, IN. Her family soon moved to a big house overlooking her beloved Lake Wehi in East Germantown, IN. There as she and three younger brothers (David, Robert, Lloyd) grew up playing and working at the Lake Wehi Resort. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Cambridge City in 1939 and later attended Indiana Business College in Muncie, Indiana and Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. During World War II she worked for the Wayne County Ration Board-in the first of several jobs that involved accounting and numbers-one of her passions. The other was writing detailed lists of daily activities. She moved from Indiana after she married James W. Duker (another 1939 Lincoln HS grad) in 1945 and they moved to Southern California where her children (Gary, a first wedding anniversary present) and Ann were were born. As the family grew their motorcycle was replaced by a brand new post-war 1939 Chevy. There would be many moves for them as the Marine Corps transferred Jim from the Territory of Hawaii, North and South Carolina, Florida, and finally back to Southern California. In retirement they built homes in Florida and Hood Canal, Washington State. Retirement also meant traveling for her and Jim. Together they wore-out two campers crisscrossing the U.S. visiting all the states except for Vermont-which she was quick to point out. Always adventurous, Mac and Jim hiked the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim multiple times and made several big road trips to Alaska. They even found time to explore Australia. In later years, Mac and Jim would return to Cambridge City for the annual Lincoln HS reunions. Mac returned to Cambridge City to be close to her extended Wickes family following the death of Jim in 2011 after 64 years of marriage. Her last year was one of many ups and downs. But a highlight for her was a family picnic at Lake Wehi and one last chance to get into the lake with the help of family. She is survied by her son Gary (Joyce) Duker of Seattle, Washington and daughter Ann (Mike) Wieseke of Muncie, Indiana, four grandchildren; Ian Wieseke (Shannon), Trevor Wieseke (Eleanor), Gretchen Carriero (Joseph) and Joel Duker (Nicole); plus six great-grandchildren Alaina, Marshal, Emma, Henry, Holden, and Dallas; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her three brothers. On Friday, April 29, 2016, friends may call from 10:00 am until the start of the funeral service at 11:00 am at Waskom Capitol Hill Chapel in Cambridge City with Rev. Jerry Mielke officating. Burial will follow in Zion's Lutheran Cemetery in Pershing with a reception afterwards at the church.
