Oelwein Daily Register Monday, Nov 18, 1918 pg 4 Bernice Phillips in Memoriam Born in Arlington Feb 28 1900--Died in Valley City ND Nov 12 1918 Bernice Viola Powell was born February 28, 1900 in Arlington, Iowa and passed away in Valley City, North Dakota, Nov 12, 1918. When she was only four years of age she lost her mother in death, and since then she made her home with her father and her grandparents. July 6 1916, she was united in marriage to Arthur Phillips of Oelwein. For a time they made their home in Oelwein and in Sept 1918, they moved to Valley City, ND. After but a short stay in Valley City and after a brief illness she said to her loved ones: "I am getting sleepy now." and she fell asleep, having found much comfort in the 14th chapter of St John. She was a member of the Christian church, having joined the same in her childhood days. The remains were accompanied from Valley City to Arlington by her husband, father and sister and husband, where after a brief sermon by Rev Ackman, she was laid to rest beside her mother in the Taylorville cemetery. She leaves to mourn her early departure her husband, Arthur Phillips of Valley City, ND; her father C H Powell of Arlington; two brothers, Forest R Powell, 12th Cav Hachita NM and Mark D Powell, Co B.S.A.T.C Ames Iowa; her sister, Mrs Claude Cole of Oelwein; her grandparents, Mr and Mrs Wm Powell and Mr and Mrs Mark Lackey, and aunt Perl Lackey, all of Arlington, as well as many other relatives and friends.
