She died of complications from abdominal surgery. Berniece was born May 18, 1925, to Robert Ernest Williams and Francis Neumeyer Williams in Bonner’s Ferry, Idaho. She had three brothers, Robert, Frank, and Leonard. They lived in Lewiston, Idaho, and her parents were tragically taken from her early. Her mother died of pneumonia when she was quite young, and her father was killed in a logging accident several years later. Berneice’s oldest brother Bob was a senior in high school at the time and he cared for the children for a year. The Neumeyer family from their mother's side took the two younger sons to their ranch outside of Lewiston. Berniece lived briefly in Lapwaii, Idaho, with an Indian family whose daughter she had befriended. She peripherally experienced the discrimination against the Nez Perce tribe that existed in those days, and it was there that she developed an appreciation for Native Americans. From there, Berniece was taken in briefly by the Brannom family on their ranch outside of Lewiston, where she worked as a babysitter for their children. When the children grew older, World War II had started and Berniece made her way to San Francisco. She met Mr. Grabofsky there. She married him after the war and they moved to Montana, living on a farm with no running water or electricity. This is likely the source of many of her stories of “the olden days”. She told of keeping chickens, and how she and little John would venture outside into the cold winters to warm the chickens with their hands. They were divorced, and with the assistance of her father-in-law she moved to Malta where she had a variety of jobs and discovered she loved working with handicapped children. She eventually moved to Nashua and worked as an aid at the Nashua School, again working with handicapped children. She filled in with a bartending job at Vick’s Place, joined a church with several Garsjo members, and was introduced to Victor. They were married in 1971, and she became mother to the young Garsjo boys, John and Mike. She always said that nobody had ever treated her as nicely as Victor. She and Victor eventually became foster parents to a sadly damaged young tribal boy, Abe, who lived with them for many years. Berniece loved children, ANY children, and she was very sociable. She loved to cook and garden and was a loyal and long-time member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran congregation. She always helped prepare the food and joined the spirit during the many Garsjo occasions. Victor passed away in 1989, and she remained in Nashua until 2004. She moved from Nashua to the Nemont Manor in Glasgow. She was excited to be around people again, and she looked forward to feeding the birds their daily breakfast, and she was pretty quick to give up cooking and turn her oven into a storage area. Last November she moved to the Valley View Home. She was preceded in death by her cherished husband and her three brothers, Leonard, Frank, and Robert. Survivors include her son Robert Grabofsky, his wife Donna, and their two children Robbie and Jenny of East Corinth, Maine; and two stepsons, John and his wife Darla, and Mike, his wife Marie, and daughter Landon, all of whom live in the Fort Worth area in Texas. She also has nieces and nephews, six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
