Bernita died Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. Bernita B. Nelson, daughter of George W. and Susie (Colburn) Gee, was born September 24, 1918, at Palmer, Nebraska. Bernita's mother died when she was one year old, and Bernita was cared for by her father and relatives, and later had a step-mother, Madeline Reynolds. The family lived in Palmer, and later Coon Rapids, Iowa, before moving to Oakdale, Nebraska, in 1931, where Bernita attended school. On November 2, 1935, she was married to Harlan V. Nelson at Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple lived in California, then operated a dairy farm near Ainsworth, Nebraska, before moving to Tilden in March of 1960, where Bernita owned and operated Bert's Café from 1962 until 1979. She then worked as a cook at Elkhorn Valley Schools from 1979 to 1991, when she retired. Bernita moved to Westwood Homes in November of 1993, and later moved to St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Care Center in Norfolk, Nebraska, in April of 2005. Bernita was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Tilden, and its Women's Society. She also held an office in the Senior Citizens. Bernita taught Sunday School, was a former 4-H member and leader for many years, and was active in the Tilden Business Women in the 1960's and 1970's. Bernita is survived by her children, Karolyn Fisher of Tilden, Nebraska, Ronald Nelson of Tilden, Nebraska, Marilyn (husband Charles) Harlan of Tilden, Nebraska, and Cheryl (husband Doug) Tassemeyer of Tilden; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father in 1982; her mother in 1919; her step-mother in 1956; one son (in infancy); a sister, Kay; a son-in-law, Carl N. Fisher; one grandson; one great-granddaughter; and one great-grandson.
