She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother. Bernita was born May 24, 1923, in Linn County, the daughter of Bryan and Josephine Cress Ward. She married Leonard L. Casteel on Jan. 19, 1947, in Iowa City. He died in 1988. Bernita was a bus driver for the College Community School System for 19 years, retiring in 1988. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading and time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the American Diabetes Association in Bernita's name.
