Bernt died Friday evening, May 26 at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood he was 90. Bernt was born in Jamtland, Sweden, February 10, 1927, the son of Nels and Ingeborg (Kvarnstrom) Ward. When he was 2 years old, the family immigrated to the United States, and settled in the Westby community of Northeastern Montana. Bernt graduated from Westby High School in 1945, and married Arline Greseth October 16, 1948. Bernt worked in several places before they returned to Plentywood in 1950, including selling and delivering cars throughout the northwestern U.S. A life-long farmer in the Westby area, Bernt also served in government; he was Sheridan County Assessor for many years, and later served several terms as a Sheridan County Commissioner. He also served on the Montana State Oil and Gas Commission; and was a retired member of the Plentywood Volunteer Fire Department. Busy as he was, he always had time to assist anyone who needed help. Bernt loved to tease, banter, and tell jokes: a favorite was that “When his family left Sweden they were too poor to buy him a ticket, so he had to swim behind the ship all the way ... and he’s never eaten a sardine since!” He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Algeria temple of the Shrine; and belonged to the Elks, the Moose, and other civic and fraternal organizations. Bernt is survived by his wife, Arline, of Plentywood, and by five children and their families: Gary, of Sidney; Cleo Ward, of Marshall, Minnesota; Barb Fink and her husband Ron, of Raymond; Roger, of Wilhoit, Arizona; and Wesley, of Plentywood. He is also survived by grandchildren Jeremie (Annie) Ward, Kristen Ward with Adam Sargent, Amber Sissel, John (Cheryl) Bromberg, Tracy (Heath) Rosenbaum, Randi Perry, Kayla (Ben) Rush, and Jorel Ward; and great-grandchildren Jacob and Katelin Sissel; Harson Mechol; Kaleb, Austin, Jax, and Finn Rosenbaum; River Jo Ward; Mason Rush, and Calel Ward. Survivors also include his siblings, Ann Marie Gregoire, of Harlem, Montana; Marjorie Sapp, of Havre, Montana; Linda Ward with Rick Neiss, of Helena; and James (Sharon) Ward, of Columbia Falls, Montana. Bernt was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Darlene Ward and Vernice Mueller, his brother, John Ward; and brothers-in-law Dan Mueller, Dan O’Leary, Giles Gregoire, and Larry Sapp; and by two grandsons, Neal and Justin Ward.
