I also was told that he ran away from home very young (12 or 13) and came west to logging camps..which is how he ended up in Darby. He was famous for his cooking in the local logging camps and I have a recipe called "Uncle Bert's Ginger Cookies".....He cut them out with a #2 tomato can.
