Golden, age 95, of Onawa, Iowa, died Tuesday May 9, 2000 at Elmwood Care Center in Onawa, Iowa. Bert was born November 9, 1904, at Little Sioux, Iowa, the son of Ira and Carrie (Henry) Golden. On October 8, 1924, he married Joy Eva Oliver at Onawa. She died June 13, 1971, at Onawa. He married Ellen (Jackson) Hall on July 3, 1973 at Elk Point, South Dakota. He was a longtime resident of Monona County and farmed in the Little Sioux, Blencoe and Castana areas. He retired and the couple moved to Onawa in 1988. He had been a resident of Elmwood Care Center since January 1994. He was affiliated with the First Christian Church in Onawa, a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Eagles Lodge #2270 at Onawa. He loved farming and livestock and his favorite evening social activity was dancing. Survivors include his wife, Ellen of Onawa; a son and his wife, Harlen and Betty Golden of Cathedral City, California; a daughter, Jeanette Smith of Castana, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a half-sister and her husband, Hildred and Harold Hollinger of Merrill, Iowa; three step-sons and two step-daughters and numerous step-grandchildren and step- great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Joy; a daughter, Helen Hilton; a sister, Katherine Edwards; a brother, Ace Golden; three half-brothers, Ted Golden, Maurice Golden and John Gross; a half-sister, Florence Gross, and a step-son. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2000 at the First Christian Church in Onawa, Iowa, with Pastor Donald R. Ludwick officiating. The organist was Mrs. Jack Jordan and the soloist, Mrs. Dennis Marcum, sang the selection”, The Old Rugged Cross” and “One Day At A Time”. The organ selection was “Mansion Over The Hill”. A special recorded selection was “Grandpa (Tell Me About the Good Old Days” by the Judds. Honorary Bearers were Larry Stevens, Barry Erickson, Fred Hall Sr., Raymond Letterly, Tim Bennet and Gerald Davis. Casket Bearers were Mike Golden, Jesse Hilton, Patrick Smith, Brandon Golden, Christy Zimmerman and Robert Hilton. Interment was held in the Kennebeck Cemetery, Castana, Iowa with arrangements by Pearson Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Onawa, Iowa.
